Android phones more popular than iPhones?

11 11 2010

I’ve been party to the debate in the war between iPhone and Android owners for some time now. I’ve sat in the pub staring at a beermat whilst the two opposing forces of Smartphone owners fight it out over OS systems, app stores and usability. I have owned both and my feeling is that both have their pros and cons. One Android loving friend of mine is so against Apple he’s actually been banned from the local Apple store as he keeps going in there in his lunch hour and “hijacking” the iPhones and iPads. (Don’t worry, not about to reveal your name!) The debate continues, which is best, why?

Well, research published today suggests that, globally, Androids are winning the battle at the moment! Gartner (a world leading information technology research and advisory company), reports that Android sales have grown 629% in the last year whilst Apple’s iPhone dropped 2%. In Q3 last year, Android accounted for just 3.5% of the market. This year it grew 25.5%.

I did some independent research myself using Google Fight (which assess numbers of search results) and it would seem that again, Android is winning this battle too! (disclaimer: yes, before you say anything about duel meaning of the word “android”, I know).

I’m going to stay neutral in this one, I’m merely fuelling the fires and reporting the facts… Smartphone legions, why do you think this has happened?
